Martin Haselböck & Orchester Wiener Akademie
Bach, Mozart & Beethoven did not compose their masterpieces for the instruments used by the symphonic orchestras of today
- indeed, nor did later composers, such as Brahms and Bruckner. They wrote for quite a different sound-world: violins and
cellos with gut strings, early oboes and flutes, valveless trumpets and horns, and timpani stretched with goatskin allow the
clear and transparent, yet velvety, soft sound the composers had in mind.
This 'original sound' has been the focus of our artistic work for more than 30 years now. In this time, the audience's interest has increased enormously, and many distinguished musicians who perform on both modern and historical instruments have become affiliated with our ensemble.

The orchestra's international reputation has been established through several pioneering achievements in concert, opera and
on recordings: the first performances of Mozart's great operas on period instruments; the award-winning recordings of Baroque
oratorios from their places of origin; the performances of the piano concertos of Liszt and Brahms performed on the pianos
the composers themselves used; the multi-award-winning recording series of Liszt's complete orchestral works; and the RESOUND
concert series, featuring the works of Beethoven performed in the historical venues of their first performances. An
essential role in achieving these great moments of music making and interpretive depth is filled by funded research and musicological
support.
