John Malkovich is Casanova in "The Giacomo Variations"
The Hollywood star is back in Ronacher.


 After the great success of the music-theatre project “The Infernal Comedy - John Malkovich is Jack Unterweger”, theatre director Kathrin Zechner presented on Monday (09.13.2010) together with the co-producing artistic director of the Ruhr Festival in Recklinghausen, Dr. Frank Hoffmann, their latest project of the “Vienna United Stages”: John Malkovich is Giacomo Casanova in THE GIACOMO VARIATIONS. It premieres on 5 January 2011 in Vienna.

 

Leading the Austrian team - director and author Michael Sturminger (text) and conductor Martin Haselböck (musical concept) - gave first insights into their work.

 

Hollywood actor John Malkovich, who plays the role of Giacomo Casanova, showed great anticipation for the project: "Mozart's music is so strong, that you can not possibly perform against it or it hits you like a wall. All you can do is to try to get on the wave and stay there as long as possible. And once you are floating together with the singers and the orchestra, it will be an unforgettable experience! "
In this comedy the well-known actor plays the aging Giacomo Casanova  - the legendary lover of countless women - who through his approaching death tries to rediscover the meaning of life. Malcovich performs with actress Ingeborga Dapkunaite, known from the movie "Seven Years in Tibet, who slips into the role of Casanova’s women. Malkovich's musical counterpart (Casanova II) is sung by the famous Austrian baritone Florian Boesch. Dapkunaite’s musical counterpart embodies the soprano Eva Liebau. The soloists perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Lorenzo Da Ponte.

Beatrix Karl presents Martin Haselböck with the Medal of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria.

 

The minister of Science and Research honoured the conductor and the Wiener Akademie as they celebrate their 25-year anniversary. Actor John Malkovich congratulates Haselböck!


Science and Research Minister Dr. Beatrix Karl awarded conductor and Univ. Prof. Martin Haselböck the Grand Medal of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria. Fittingly with the 25th anniversary of his Wiener Akademie orchestra with whom on 1.June 2010 he gave a jubilee concert at the Musikverein, followed by a reception in the impressive domed-hall of the Technical University of Vienna. Celebrity guest and well-wisher was the U.S. actor John Malkovich, who stars in the most recent project of Haselböck-  "The Infernal Comedy". A resounding quarter-century”, concluded the Minister on the impact that the Wiener Akademie has had over the past 25 years. The successful period-instrument orchestra is at home in the major concert halls of Europe and all over the world. It has its own concert series at Vienna's Musikverein and is a regular guest at internationally renowned festivals and concert series."


"But what would an orchestra be without its conductor, "says Beatrix Karl who emphasized that Martin Haselböck is a particularly valuable and, in the truest sense of the word, an outstanding conductor. The conductor/founder of the Wiener Akademie and professor at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts was awarded the Grand Medal of Honour for his commitment to the Republic of Austria. Beatrix Karl praised Haselböck as being a" baroque aesthete and an exceptional conductor”. With regards to his versatility, the Viennese musician is a teacher, composer, editor, organist and conductor, but also a passionate philosopher and art historian. As a conductor and composer, he is an all-rounder on the international stage and is presently Austria's most famous organist.
